The Tshivenda traditional music group, the Malisakholomo Band from Mahagala Halambani, has released a new double-disc album titled Vhuranga Phanda, meaning “leadership.” The album encourages people to respect leadership in their communities and in government.
Group leader Apostle Takalani David Netshivodza, better known as “Apostle Mudavudavu,” composed and produced the album himself, with Thivhalitshi Gumula and Lindiwe Nthai on backing vocals, and Ishy Malala on bass guitar.
The Malisakholomo Band was formed in 2012 by Netshivodza, Avhasei Luvhengo, Mukhethwa Mahafha and Sophia Munyai. That year, they released their first album, Iyani Zwikoloni. In 2013, they recorded their second album, Vho Rosina, and in 2014 the group teamed up with another Tshivenda artist, Ishy Malala, to record the album Mbifho Yanga. In 2025, the band released the album Ndebvu Dzii a Vhengana.
At the 2024 TSHIMA Awards, competing against other well-known Tshivenda traditional groups such as the Adziambei Band, Julia Nemakhavhani, the Mudzinginyo Band and Solomon Mathase, the Malisakholomo Band emerged victorious with the song Phungo a Dzi Lingani.
“Winning the awards encouraged the band. We learned that hard work will eventually pay off, and as Tshivenda traditional artists we love to promote our language. We are ready to bring back our culture through music,” said Netshivodza.
