Mizo Phyll’s Gastronomy Concept has become a regular lifestyle event in the Vhembe region, combining music, informal trade and family-oriented leisure in a single setting. The initiative reflects a growing demand for accessible, community-based entertainment in the area.
The event is held once a month on Sundays at Shuma Park. With an entrance fee of R30, it is positioned as an affordable option and provides a consistent platform for local artists and traders. Its daytime schedule and family-friendly format distinguish it from nightlife-focused entertainment events.
Music is a core feature, with local DJs and performers using the platform to present their work outside of conventional club venues. Organisers say the format allows artists to reach broader audiences and encourages participation from community members who may not attend night-time events.
Award-winning artist Makhadzi has described the concept as a necessary platform, citing its role in promoting local artists and providing opportunities to build a following.
The event also accommodates food vendors, informal traders and emerging lifestyle brands, who operate within a structured trading environment. For small businesses with limited access to permanent trading spaces, the initiative offers an opportunity to engage directly with customers and generate income within the local economy.
By integrating entertainment, trade and social interaction, the Gastronomy Concept addresses a lack of organised leisure spaces in parts of Vhembe and contributes to local economic activity.
