Ndaedzo Mandiwana steps into the spotlight with debut reggae album

After many years of working quietly behind the scenes in the music industry, Ndaedzo Mandiwana has released his debut reggae album, marking a significant personal milestone and the culmination of a long creative journey rooted in purpose and message-driven music.

Mandiwana, who has built his career as a keyboardist, lead vocalist and promoter, said the album was not initially intended as a personal release. “It is my first professional album,” he said. “When I was writing the music, my intention was to give it to other artists who could spread the message.”

The direction of the project changed after encouragement from his brother, Takalani Mudau, who suggested recording one song as a test. That first recording proved decisive.

“After recording one song, he told me that he could work with my voice, and that was the beginning — recording one song after another until we had nine,” Mandiwana said.

His years of experience in different roles within the industry shaped his artistic outlook and work ethic. He said collaboration taught him humility and the importance of valuing diverse perspectives.

“All that has taught me to be grounded,” he said. “It requires working with other people, getting inputs and advice, and learning that you cannot always be right.”

Reggae was a natural choice for his debut album. Mandiwana said the genre reflects both his personal identity and the enduring relevance of its messages.

“For me, reggae music is in my blood,” he said. “The message we are sending through reggae music is a lifetime message that will never grow old.”

The album took two years to complete, although the music itself dates back further. Mandiwana began writing songs in 2018 and later selected nine tracks, releasing six on the final album.

The main themes of the project are love and respect, which he believes are essential values in addressing today’s social challenges.

One of the standout songs, Against GBV, tackles gender-based violence and delivers a direct message to society.

“It is sending a message to the nation, facing the daily challenges that families encounter,” Mandiwana said. “I am against GBV at all given costs.”

The album features collaborations with Takalani Mudau of TK Records and producer Gabriel Tshisikule. Mandiwana said working with them helped him overcome self-doubt and build confidence as a recording artist.

Plans are under way for an official album launch and roadshows, with dates and venues to be announced soon.
