Two major water projects start in Musina to ensure constant supply

Two major water projects in Musina were handed over to contractors last Wednesday. Funded by the Water Services Infrastructure Grant (WSIG), the projects aim to improve water supply for Musina town and its surrounding townships.

The first project, with a budget of R98.58 million, involves upgrading the Limpopo Booster Pump Station and building new reservoirs. The contract was awarded to My Granny General Trading, with oversight by HWA Consulting Engineers.

Work includes refurbishing the existing 1.5 ML reservoir, constructing an additional 2 ML reservoir, upgrading Pump Station 1, building a 650 mm steel pipeline to the Oorplaas Water Treatment Works, providing staff accommodation, and refurbishing the boundary fence. The project is expected to take 12 months, with completion scheduled for 31 January 2027.

The second project, costing R96.54 million, was awarded to PK Consulting CC, with HWA Engineers and Project Managers appointed as the engineer.

The scope includes constructing a 650 mm steel pipeline from the Limpopo Booster Pump Station to Oorplaas MTW, and a 450 mm pipeline from the Oorplaas Pump Station to Bergview. Like the first, it is a 12-month project with an expected completion date of 31 January 2027.

Speaking at the handover, the executive mayor of the Vhembe Ditrict Municipality, Cllr Freda Nkondo, said the projects are a direct response to water supply challenges in Musina. “These major projects will help address the water problems our community has faced for years,” she said.

Cllr Victor Manavhela, responsible for technical services in Musina Municipality, welcomed the upgrades and urged the community to protect the new infrastructure. “We should guard against vandalism, as it can derail service delivery plans,” he said.
