The Mr and Miss Vhembe District High Schools Pageant has grown into a platform that helps young people build confidence, leadership skills, and a sense of responsibility towards their communities.
Founder Zwonaka Paris Makhado said she always knew she would return to schools but never imagined founding a pageant across Vhembe West. After presenting her idea to Vhembe West District Director Mr Ravhuanzu, she was allowed to operate in district schools as a coordinator in 2023.
Now in its fourth year, the pageant will host its third grand finale on 4 April at Makhado Community Hall in Biaba. The competition is open to Grade 8 to 11 learners, regardless of gender, height, or skin colour. Makhado said the aim is not only about beauty or titles but about developing young people who understand the importance of giving back.
“The crowns and sashes are not decorations. They are there to serve the community,” she said.
Participants engage in community work each term, from visits to day-care centres to water donations, and a larger charity drive later this year will provide school shoes and sanitary pads to learners in need. Despite financial challenges, the pageant supports contestants with workshops, counselling, and boot camps.
Reigning Miss Vhembe District High Schools 2024/25, Karabo Khampha, said winning was a dream come true and a tribute to her late mother. She will represent Vhembe District at Miss Teen Provincial South Africa.
Makhado is now planning to expand the project through Miss Elite South Africa, a national pageant for teens aged 13 to 19.
