Jerrey Maseko, Limpopo MEC for Sports, Arts and Culture, last week launched the provincial sports awards during a media session at Silver Exclusive Lodge in Polokwane.
During the event on the evening of 16 January, Maseko said the awards would recognise hard-working sportspeople who play a key role in developing sport in the province. He added that athletes would continue to be at the centre of the department’s plans.
“Sport is an important vehicle for nurturing a healthy and cohesive society,” he said. “It also has a significant role to play in contributing to economic development. Through sporting activities, government is able to keep community members, especially the youth, engaged and away from social ills such as criminality and alcohol and drug abuse.”
The biggest prize on offer is R50,000 for the Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year and the Disabled Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year categories. Winners in each category will automatically qualify for nomination to the national sports awards.
Maseko said the third instalment of the Limpopo Sports Awards will be held on Saturday, 24 January. Athletes from all sports confederations will be nominated in 17 different categories. In addition to the Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year awards, other categories include Newcomer of the Year, Coach of the Year, School Team of the Year, Administrator of the Year, Volunteer of the Year, Journalist of the Year, and Photographer of the Year.
The awards ceremony will be held at The Ranch Hotel outside Polokwane. Four sports personalities from Vhembe — Sheryl James, Masala Makatu, Ofhani Munyai, and Vhumbani Masakona — are among the nominees.
