Athletes from Vhembe and other regions will compete for honours in the MM Active Road Race in Thohoyandou on 20 December.
Participants can enter a half-marathon (21.1 km), a 10 km or a 5 km race, with an option of a 5 km walk. More than 500 athletes are expected to take part in the half-marathon. The main race will start at 06:00 at Thavhani Mall, where it will also finish.
Organiser Andrew Mavhona said spectators and competitors could expect fireworks this year. “We have managed to draw big names to this race, which will give it the stature it deserves.” The half-marathon winner will receive R5,000, while the runner-up will take home R2,500.
Veteran runner Jane Mudau is determined to win. “I don’t think it will be an easy race because I expect a large number of good runners on the day,” she said. “I have prepared well and do not want to disappoint my supporters.”
Race sponsor Mr Mpho Magoro of MM Active said the event aimed to promote long-distance running in the area.
